Preventive Care & Wellness
Vaccines, spay/neuter, and keeping your pet healthy
Spaying or neutering can generally be performed at approximately 6 months of age. Recommendations for large-breed dogs are slightly different. Our doctors would be happy to discuss the best age for spaying or neutering your pet at their visit. Prior to surgery, your pet will receive a physical exam to confirm they are healthy enough for the procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery, and a pre-anesthetic blood screen is strongly recommended before undergoing anesthesia.
No — there is no medical or behavioral advantage to letting your pet have one litter first. In fact, early spaying and neutering offers significant health benefits including:
✓ Decreased risk of mammary tumors later in life
✓ Reduced chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections
✓ Reduced roaming, spraying, and marking behavior
✓ Helps reduce the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens
General Care Questions
Sutures, boarding, and other common questions
The pre-anesthetic blood screen is a blood test run here in our clinic before any surgical procedure. It evaluates your pet's organ function, blood counts, and clotting ability to ensure they can safely handle anesthesia and recover well afterward. Even apparently healthy animals can have underlying issues that only blood testing can detect — finding them before surgery is far safer than discovering them during a procedure.
We offer three levels of in-house screening; our doctors will discuss the options with you at check-in and recommend the most appropriate level based on your pet's age and health history.
External skin sutures are typically removed 10 to 14 days after surgery. We will schedule a follow-up appointment for suture removal. Many of our procedures use absorbable sutures placed beneath the skin that dissolve on their own — your veterinarian will let you know which type was used and what to watch for at home.
Suture removal: 10–14 days post-surgery
No — we do not offer boarding or kennel services. Coronado Animal Clinic is a full-service veterinary clinic focused entirely on medical, surgical, and dental care for your pet. We do not have kennels on site. Pets that are hospitalized during our regular business hours for medical reasons are supervised by our clinical team as part of their treatment. We do not have 24-hour care, so any patients who require continued hospitalization will need to be transferred to a 24-hour clinic.
